Human history, unsurprisingly, is very long and full of more details and events than anyone could remember. 1. The distinction between modern and pre-modern is a bit shaky at times. The most common dispute about when “modern” history begins is whether it starts right before or right after the Middle Ages (being named as such because they fall between Classical history and Modern history). Ultimately the distinction between modern and pre-modern is fairly arbitrary, especially when applied to places outside of Europe.

1945 – The United Nations was established after the two world wars.
1600 – Singular authorities ruled the major realms: the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East, the Mughal Empire in India, and the Ming Dynasty in China. Europe also rose and expanded across countries.

1811 – German chemist Robert Wilhelm Bunsen was born in Gottingen, Westphalia. He observed that each element emits a light of characteristic wavelength.
1870 – For the first time, an African-American voter cast his vote. Thomas Mundy Peterson became the first African-American voter to cast his ballot. This was a major success towards giving equal rights to African-Americans.
