The ten tips for Changing Health Behavior

Following many years of dealing with health science students to assist adults to improve health behaviors, David Harber thought it would be great to offer them a basic formula for increasing the chances of success. He, therefore, designed his structure for assisting older people to achieve the desired change in health behavior. He chose to call it the ten tips with each older adult showing interest in behavior change. In this paragraph, I will recount one possible challenge for each of the ten tips for Changing Health Behaviors in older adults. To make these points more practical, I will base on the particular goal of improving physical activity or exercise. Most of the older people would most likely choose this goal among the many presented to them. In summary, the ten tips constitute; motivation, modest, measurable, memory, positive thoughts, reinforcement, environmental support, stress management, social support, and problem solve. It is clear that an individual should be motivated to change a health behavior. However, the initial motivation recognized by an older person may not be one that excites them. To overcome this challenge, one may need to come up with a politically related motivation that evokes the consent of other people. It is better to spend more time with the client to establish the customer’s facial expressions in order to get a sign of what they consider important. It is crucial for one to set a modest goal. A modest goal is usually to take a short period. For instance, if a person set a goal to do physical activity four days in a week and meets or surpass their aim, motivation will be maintained. However, if they plan to work out daily, four days will be a defeat. This is when a client is making a goal that is too simple and later loses attention. To avoid such a situation, the client should be assisted to modify their purpose of making it neither undemanding, nor grandiose. Measurability is   important in the activities being undertaken by older people when working on their goals. Some clients may fail to keep track on their physical activities such as how many hours of physical exercise and how frequently in a week. Failure to note this the client may not be able to tell if they met their goal thereby affecting their confidence. In this case, clients should be encouraged to keep a record of all their activities and monitor their progress in low frequencies to boost their trust. It takes a while to get used to a new habit. Therefore, when some clients seek to adopt new health behavior, they are bound to forget some activities that are not part of their daily routine. Clients should be encouraged to enhance their memory as frequently as possible by doing acts such as, placing walking shoes at their doorstep or putting a note to remind them on the refrigerator door. Negative thoughts are bound to pop into the client’s mind now and then regarding their goal achievement. Customers can be encouraged to read books and magazines, that motivate, inspire and encourage them not to give up on their goal. Reinforcement is significant, particularly when it comes to nearing the goal. However, some clients may become discouraged when they do not receive external support such from their loved ones. In this case, customers can encourage speaking highly of themselves as they close into achieving their goal. Environmental support, also known as stimulus control, may be compromised when a client fails to contribute towards making the environment-friendly to their goals. For instance, if an individual keeps junk food that they may just be tempted to consume it. Clients are encouraged to ensure that their immediate surroundings are void of anything that would lure them into compromising their healthy behaviors. It is rare to find a person who is not stressed these days. However, many people including the older adults are not aware of the best way to avert pressure and may try to employ undesirable ways to deal with stress. Older adult’s people should always be encouraged to the practice of calming down as they breathe in and out before calmly thinking of the best action to take. Lack of social support for an older person who may be striving to achieve their goal may affect their motivation hence reduces the probability of goal achievement. Clients should be encouraged to focus on their goal and avoid worrying about negative distractions. Problems are a common occurrence in any activity including. Clients, who encounter challenges during their activities such as being taken ill while they need to exercise, should be made to understand that it is normal   and that they can always pick up from where they left once they get better.

Major change initiatives to better serve the health needs of older people.

The increasing number and percentage of seniors in the United States are historically unknown. Two features namely aging baby boomers and longer life span will merge to double the number of individuals aged 65 and over the next 25 years to approximately 72 million. By 2030, older people will constitute 20% of the population of the US. The aging of citizens will influence significantly on the planning and, provision of health care. Consequently, it will be particularly important for policy makers and, other stakeholders to implement some major change initiatives to improve the health care for older adults. To begin with, there is a need to initiate long-term care financing. This funding should be used for care services that last for longer periods such as community and home base services, as well as nursing home care. The financing should be made through private insurance, government funded programs and personal payments. The absence of private or public insurance cover indicates that out of pocket funding makes up a huge proportion of long-term care financing. Secondly, there should be a shift in focus from acute to chronic illness. The aging number of individuals will have to concentrate on chronic diseases such as osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and heart disease other than acute illnesses. The method of medicine will have to transition from one-time interventions that solve one problem to the current control of different disabilities and diseases. Medical professions and patients will require developing a continuous interaction with each other, tailored towards assisting patients in dealing with diseases instead of curing them. In addition, chronic illnesses usually present with the disability, indicating that long-term care services like adult day care, home health, concrete housing, nursing homes, and personal care will become a lot more significant sources of care. Furthermore, establish a different method of integrating long-term and medical care services will be-. Lastly, it is important to address the issues of health and long-term care workers. There is a rising unease concerning the present and future availability of long-term care professionals, particularly the paraprofessional employees such as personal care assistants, certified nurse, and home health aides. Untrained paraprofessionals, who contribute most to the long-term care services, are mainly women and inconsistently selected from minority backgrounds. Due to low pay, heavy workloads, poor working environments, and job stigmatization by people, recruiting, and retaining workers becomes a challenge.

Life Review

Life review s qualitative study founded on personal questions with the aim of establishing the views of an older adult, concerning what makes up a successful aging and, what could be improved may assist a client to review their life. The kinds of questions in this interview are aimed at highlighting the older person’s views and experiences, on successful aging. Such questions could be; when where were you born. What type of school did you attend? Tell me more about your Parents; Do you have sibling, talk about them; Describe your marriage, your first job and leaving home; Do .you have children, what was your experience in raising them; Who do you consider to be the most important people in your life; How was your experience in retirement; Describe your health and how you feel; What is the source of your happiness? The scrutiny of the data obtained from a life review study is essential to a comprehensive understanding of the older adult, his/her personality growth and, of the process of aging. Often, this analysis also provides information on psychological, social, cultural, and historical matters. By addressing those areas in their life, a client benefits therapeutically in many ways. The therapy equips the older person with meaning, hope, and value in their lives. In addition to treating depression among seniors, a medical provider may also use life review to go hand in hand with other medical procedures to ease anxiety. Life review can also enhance better self-esteem. Some people may not recognize the importance of their achievements. Therefore reflecting back aids in making feel proud of themselves.

Transformation of our local Senior Citizens Library Center

Being the Director of our local medical library for the older adults, I have been given a role in transitioning its structure and, functions to meet the needs of our patrons better. The most crucial step in the transformation is to perform preliminary assessment activities in the community. First, I would collect demographic data of the community by conducting the American Fact finder to access the current information from the yearly American community survey. I will also look at the area planning entity for the latest community description. I will evaluate our library organization and the community’s reaction. Several institutions and organizations are willing to offer free services to older people. I would identify and approach these groups, which have similar interests’. I would there after host and encourage partnership relationship and, seek for long term associations with them. In addition, other agencies may offer paid services to the patrons. Universities and colleges offer cultural programming and, further studies. Credit institutions and banks offer financial education projects and service discounts. Moreover, they sponsor social occasions targeting older adults. The aim would be to establish a community outreach plan to provide computer training, on ways through which to obtain health data through NLM and other relevant databases. The objective is to assist local older people to upgrade their heath and healthcare by accessing reliable information. The community outreach project to provide computer training on how to access electronic health information using the NLM and related databases. The goal is to enable local senior residents to improve their health and, health care by accessing authoritative information. The library outreach plan will transform into a wider environment for learning health ideas, which are receptive to people from diverse backgrounds, and other multiple surroundings. Health information obtained from this forum would go a long way in addressing the older people’s health needs such as how to manage their weight and eat healthily.

Medicalization of Aging

Medicalization is the procedure through which nonmedical issues become established and handled as medical issues, often regarding diseases and disabilities. Despite the fact that spirituality has been established to be a major constituent of every person, the health professionals have considered not much. There have been various explanations as to why healthcare professionals have neglected the spiritual domain, one being the fear of forcing one’ perceptions of others, and lack of own understanding of the concept. However, there are more reasons why our public policy initiatives need to move away from medical care and, focus on wellness care. Medicalization offers guidance to the body-mind relationship, thereby training in relaxation. It is also a behavioral treatment for exercise insomnia and nutrition. At the end of therapy, the intervention classes showed a marked reduction in self-reported insomnia, depression, pain, and anxiety. The-intervention also resulted in a big decline in negative self-perceptions among patients. After a year of such interference, patients reported having preserved benefits in health locus control and sleep. There was also a significant improvement in health habits as compared to controls. This kind of classroom interventions seems to possess a long term impact on health behaviors and perceptions.
